There are 47 lakh elementary school teachers in India. A study has showed that 45% of these teachers have not studied beyond class XII. The study was conducted by National University of Education Planning & Administration (UNEPA). Study has further showed that 25% of these teachers have passed only class X. Only about one-third, who teach class I to class VIII, are graduates. About 17% are postgrduates and above. Rest have never been beyond school level.
Enrolment in primary schools has soared very high across the country. It was being seen as a grand success. But if these teachers are teaching children then what is the use of these success figures? Kehte hain jab neev hi pakki nahin tab imaarat pakki kaise hogi.
This news reminded me of a joke. A studnt inspite of studying very hard in school was weak in maths. On the advice of the teacher his father arranged a tutor for him. But the student again failed in the exam. His father thought about the problem and came to the conclusion that tutors himself needed tution. So the tutor continued to teach his son, and he arranged a tutor for the tutor. Perhaps these teachers need tution.
